SPLC's Faux Pas regarding Asatru PDF Print E-mail

Recently it came to light that the Southern Poverty Law Center's intelligence report, entitled Killer Kindred , described Asatru as "a racist neo-pagan faith". This mischaracterization left a bad taste in the mouths of many Heathens of course. The article is about a prison gang that makes use of Asatru in a twisted racist way. The gang also traffics drugs, commits, murder, theft, runs dog fighting rings, etc. The way the SPLC portrayed Asatru was not only disrespectful to those who actually belong to that faith, but it directly goes against the purpose of the SPLC by promoting intolerance and discrimination of Asatru.

As many of us know, heathens do not take things lying down. Many Asatruar and other Heathens wrote letters(snail mail and email) to the SPLC asking for a revision/retraction. This has happened before with the SPLC, so some were not sure anything would be changed. Many wrote long, well thought out letters, some of which explained how calling Asatru a racist religion is akin to calling Christianity a racist religion because there are racist Christians. Some even thought to send photos of themselves, to show that it isn't just those with white skin who follow this faith. None of this should've have been necessary of course. Those at the SPLC know very well that Asatru is NOT a racist religion. There is nothing in the lore that promotes racism or white supremacy. They know this, and the fact that they would make such a mistake is abhorrent.

The SPLC received so much pressure from the Heathen community that they did revise the article in question. In place of "a racist neo-pagan faith", it now reads "a neo-pagan faith that is not fundamentally racist, but is practiced by some racists". They've even responded to a few of the letters with apologies. The wording is a bit better by not directly calling it a racist faith, but there's no need to include "but is practiced by some racists", since many religions have racists.

Still, this is an acheivement and a big thank you goes out to all those who sent correspondence to the SPLC about this issue. Hail the Heathen community!
